One Month Prior to Moving

• Fill out Change of Address form. (Get one from your local post office or click HERE.)
• Reserve a truck or make arrangements with a moving company
• If necessary, make travel arrangements with air-lines, hotels & car rentals. If you have pets, make arrangements for them as well.
• Transfer or terminate any local memberships such as health clubs & civic organizations
• If necessary, set up a new bank account with your new local bank.
• Take an inventory of your belongings before they get packed in the event you may need to file an insurance claim later. You may want to take pictures or video tape and record the serial numbers from your electronic equipment.
• Start using up your food items so there is less to pack and possibly spoil

One to Two Weeks Prior to Moving

• Switch your utility providers to your new address. Notify the following.

            *Electrical company

            *Water company

*Waste/trash pick up company

            *Gas company

            *Cable company

            *Telephone company

• Arrange for help on moving day
• Confirm travel reservations
• Clean rugs and clothing to get them ready for packing
• Close bank accounts and have funds transferred into the new bank account (if necessary). Be sure all checks and automatic payments have been processed.
• Check with your insurance agent and make sure you are covered in your policy for your move.
• Give a close friend or relative your travel route, if you are not traveling locally, so you may be reached if needed.

On Moving Day

• Double check closets, drawers, shelves, attic, workshops/storage and garage and be sure they're empty.
• Carry important documents, jewelry & currency yourself, or use registered mail.
• If traveling, carry travelers checks for quick, available funds.

After Arriving at Your New Home

• Renew your Driver's License with your new address and if necessary, your auto tags and registration.
• Shop around for insurance coverage for your home and especially your auto.
• Familiarize yourself with your new area and surroundings. Find out where the local hospitals, police & fire stations are located.
